I'd Rather Dye!

About forty years ago when those little bothersome, but obvious, gray hairs started showing up in my coiffure, my son would gladly pull them out. There may have been a twofold benefit to the process, because, for me, my gray hairs disappeared and my son was probably happy to yank some hairs from his mother's head! Even though I have a rather full head of hair it became apparent that this couldn't continue or he would have a bald mother.

So I began investigating the various hair coloring products on the market to see what would be good for me. There are a number of different ways to go. One, of course, is to go to a beautician and let her do the work for you. You are just about guaranteed a suitable color, you don't have the messiness of doing it yourself and it does feel nice to be "pampered". The only drawback is the cost of having it done professionally. I have gone this route a number of times when I felt I could afford it and when I felt I needed a little TLC just for me.

Most of the time, though, I go to the cosmetic department in a store and look over the various hair coloring products. There are many brands of temporary colors, semi permanent and permanent colors, developers, bleaching, highlighting, and, of course, correction solutions. My greatest fear in choosing any color is that I may end up being all orange or green or something when it's time to go out into the world.

But I tried several of them and found one that seems to be adequate for me. I almost need to make an appointment with myself to do the job because it is not high on my list of fun things to do. But I don an old robe so I don't dye my clothes, lock the doors so no one can come in and see me, and start the process. You need to mix the solution, put on the gloves and saturate your hair with the coloring. Then leave it on for 15 or 20 minutes. (The directions tell you about test strips, etc. and timing but I've done it enough times that I know about how long to let the stuff work on my hair.) The only bad part is that one day I was sitting in my recliner waiting for the magic to work and I accidentally fell asleep and my head fell back and I dyed a spot just the size of my head in the chair. Oh, well, I just covered it up with a decorative towel.

Then you wash it out and hold your breath to see if the color is what you hoped for. I've been a myriad of shades but never anything as harsh as jet black or all blond so I just continue with the styling and am thankful that I have another couple of weeks without gray hairs. I don't know what I would do if it did turn out to be one of those weird colors. In this day and age, though, probably no one would notice.
Would I like to have gray hair? I rather dye first!
